CIC Practical Examiner Training Course (Includes three days of classroom training plus a practical exam on the last day)

The Practical Examiner Training Course is a requirement for certified crane operators who want to become Authorized Practical Examiners. Through this 4-day program, taught by one of our experienced Practical Examiners, students will receive instruction about every aspect of practical exam administration in accordance with CIC standards. 

Training Topics

  • Exam Administration: Training on the procedures and standards for administering practical exams, including setting up official course layouts, managing the examination site according to specific guidelines, and administering the actual exam with crane certification candidates.
  • Observation Techniques: Instruction on how to objectively and accurately identify and record candidate performance on specific and essential crane operator tasks.
  • Pre-Operational Inspections: Guidelines for conducting thorough pre-operational inspections of equipment to ensure safety and compliance before exams begin.
  • Crane Operation Requirements: Detailed training about the specific tasks and maneuvers candidates must perform.
  • Safety Procedures: Emphasis on maintaining exam site safety before, during and after the exam process for the Practical Examiner, Assistant Practical Examiner, Candidate, and anyone else in or around the exam site.
  • Crane Setup and Shutdown: Instructions on the proper setup and shutdown of cranes as part of the practical examination process.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Training on the proper documentation and reporting procedures for recording exam results and maintaining accurate records.

Course Materials

Students will be provided with the Practical Examiner Handbook which will serve as the basis for the course. 

Requirements for CIC Authorized Practical Examiner Applicants

  • Interested applicants must submit an application for review and approval by CIC prior to attending the class.
  • Applications must be at least 21 year of age, which will be verified by the applicant’s current and valid government issued photo ID card (driver’s license, passport, or military ID).
  • To apply, applicants must also hold a current and valid crane operator certification from CIC or other nationally recognized accredited certification organization. Please note that Non-CIC applicants must provide a clear, readable copy of their certification card (front and back of card).
  • Applicants must agree to maintain compliance with all OSHA and ASME standards for crane operators, CIC Practical Examiner Policies and Procedures as found in the CIC Practical Examiner Handbook, and the CIC Code of Ethics & Substance Abuse Policies.
  • To achieve authorization, applicants must complete the full course and take and pass the Practical Examiner test.
